Trained as a computer scientist, Dr. Wei Ding is interested in harnessing novel analysis and visualization techniques to address the challenges posed by Big Data in various disciplines. He currently leads research projects to develop analysis methods and interactive visualization applications to uncover patterns and dynamics otherwise hidden using traditional close reading strategies in large text corpora.
He has completed his PhD and subsequently worked as a postdoc at Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology in Tübingen, where he has developed software tools to analyze and visualize microbial pan-genomic data in Richard Neher’s group. He has since earned two independent grants to prototype software solutions for hospital epidemiology. As an independent group leader, he has then focused primarily on synthesizing computational methods including natural language processing and machine learning algorithms as well as a variety of visualization approaches to better understand massive literary texts in the Digital Humanities Lab at the University of Basel.
